World Water Week 2017 – Wastewater Skills and Reuse Options needed

Stockholm August 2017 – only 20% of the world wastewater gets treated.

Back from Stockholm, where I was involved in two lectures – wastewater treatment needs skilled staff and strengthening wastewater reuse project thinking – I can see that the discussion is still in a very theoretical status. World Water Week is a very much political, development countries and UN driven event.

That is needed to allocate financial and political support around the globe but sometimes it is too high in the “cloud” for me.

Nevertheless I learnt about the political global roadmap and that’s helps me in my more practical job.

The best thing is to meet colleagues and friends again and to discuss further practical protect possibilities and to learn where the “money thinking” of donors intend to go.

From 26.-31.8.2018 the next topic will be focus on Water, Ecosystem and Human.

I will try to get the new Worldskills “Water Technician” and the “Water Skills and University Challenge” movement shown. The world wastewater sector needs qualified engineers, scientists and particular skilled water technicians.

2. University Challenge 2016 China in Water Technology

Shanghai, May 2016

During the IEexpo in Shanghai the 2. UC was done with 9 IWRM-Teams and 8 DHI Serious Game Teams from various Universities from the Shanghai Region.

The trade show  is growing constandly. 1300 companies and 43.000 visitors showed up. The students  were very active and enjoyed the two disciplines. The first discipline, supported by the company DHI, was the Serious Game “Aqua Republica”. The students have to create a landscape and show how they work with the water resources and further resources. The DWA – IWRM Integrated Water Resource Management showes a landscape and the Students have to glue the DWA environmental cards to the various areas. After that they have to explain their work.

DWA will continous develop the new University Challenges tasks. It is the aim to organize this Challenge during the trade shows.

1. University Challenge during IFAT Mumbai/India

1. University Challenge during IFAT Mumbai 2015

This week I have been to Mumbai/India. After 9 hours flight I arrived again this amazing dynamic and crazy city. It is the third time of IFAT India; the trade show I always attend to lead the German Pavilion.

This time we have prepared, together with our friend Prof. Singh, the 1. University Challenge in IWRM (Integrated Waters Resources Management).

Eight teams from e.g. Delhi, Jaipur, Bangalore, Pune, Warangal, Gujarat showed up. The Tasked was to create a smart “green province” by using the 62 DWA Environmental Cards. These cards cover water structures, water supply, wastewater, waste and energy subjects. To place them in the green province was the challenge.

The Team from Jaipur won and they will travel to the IFAT Munich in 2016. This is possible because the Ludwig Obländer Federation (founder of the company WILO) supports this event. The WILO Company invited the first and second team from MSU Gujarat to his pump factory. A great and nice support for this event.IMG_5859

The Jury and the students in Action

It is great to see the young people active. The winner team is happy and looking forward to travel the first time to Germany and to participate on the 1. World University Challenge in IWRM during IFAT Munich 2016.

The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) organized an Alumni Programme during this week and the 15 participants, most Professors from various countries, participated on the “serious game” competition “Aqua Republica”. Thanks to the company DHI who supports us in this new discipline.

I enjoyed it very much to keep professors and students busy for 3 hours during the trade show.

IE expo – China trade show booms – 1. DWA University Challenge started

image

Conference with DWA and Tongji University

In 2004 the IFAT China started it’s work in Shanghai. One hall at that time, now five halls are full with more than 1000 companies. I’m always involved in the conference and the German Pavilion. The Pavilion hosted 15 companies, the conference with more than 20 lectures and more than 300 participants went well.
It was the first time that I organised the University Challenge with 5 Universities an 10 teams. The Wilo (Obländer Stiftung) company supported the event and sponsored the prices. The winners will come to Germany in 2016.
These new challenges will start in all IFAT’s trade shows and will be one new initiative from DWA.
After having started the skills competition in 2010 for the workers now the challenge for students will “fly”.
