Water Technology – a new skill in Worldskills International

Last week we met in Esslingen to prepare the trip to the Worldskills event in October 2017 in Abu Dhabi.

Worldskills International expects more than 1300 competitors and 150 000 visitors from more than 70 countries. The German Team will sent competitors for 37 skills. This year the new “Water Technolgy Skill” will start and Patrick from Neuwied will be the German competitor. He started his training already and the expert Hilmer is doing a good job to train the young wastewater technician who is in his 2nd year of education. Even the Russian Team came to Stuttgart for a one week training. 

I will travel to Abu Dhabi in October to support the new skill. We need 12 countries to stay in the competition. In Abu Dhabi 5 countries will join. DWA will support this event. There are also some companies like FESTO and Adiro who supports this event.

Nexus Conference Dresden – UNU-Flores – Where people meet

Dresden, May 18th 2017

The Nexus Conference 2017 (Water, Energy and Agriculture) attracted over 400 professionals to Dresden. I was there with an DWA booth and attended the conference. Beside that DWA and United Nations University UNU-Flores signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work closer together in the years to come.


During one evening these seven people from 6 Nations (USA, Tunesia, Bukina Faso, Iran, Jordan, Germany) spend a very nice evening together.  We went through Dresden and I explained  a bit the history of Dresden and Germany. We expored that all the nations are interconnected e.g. by religion, trade or projects. This years we celebrate 500 years of Martin Luther – the priest who became the first protestant.

Collaboration and international work is one part of my job.
It is not only a job – it is joy and I appreciate this work very much.

Shanghai, May 6th 2017, IE expo 2017

The serie of University Challenges continued in May in Shanghai during the trade show IE expo. 10 Teams from 5 Universities participated during this 3rd event. We extended the tasks and beside the IWRM job they had to do another task.


The students had to go to the 28 German companies who were at the German Pavillion and they had to gether information from the companies. After 5 hours the winning team was found.
The winning team came this time from the Tongji University.
With the sponsoring and support from the Wilo Foundation the three students will come to the IFAT Muenich 2018.

4th Arab Water Week (AWW) – 1st UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE Arab Region

2-2017 1st Uni C Arab Jordanien (56)Jordan, Dead Sea

The AWW took place from 19.-21.3.2017 at the Dead Sea with more than 400 participants. In 46 sessions 144 lectures took place. 26 companies presented their products. ACWUA is doing a good job and the number of participants are growing from time to time.  I participated in all conferences so far. I do know ACWUA since its beginning because I was involved in the establishment of this association and I’m a honorary member.

2-2017 1st Uni C Arab Jordanien (59)

With the help of the Wilo Foundation we could conduct the 1st UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE for the Arab Region with 3 Universities. The Jordan University won this competition. It is the idea to attract more Universities in future, also from other ACWUA member states. The winning team will join the WORLD UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE during IFAT in Munich in May 2018.

I had help from Lena Gomer.  She did all the work and without her this event would not have taken place. I enjoyed the competition very much.Working with student is fun. I hope we could continue to work with ACWUA to establish and to extend this event in future.

The DWA/IFAT ALL Star Team and Team Düsseldorf trained with the Chicago Sewer Rats and three WEFTEC jury members. Donnie, Stephen and Wesley won the title couple of times and they know all the details and the falts. They trained us from 8:30 till 17:00 and the Chicago Sewer Rats did an excellent job in coaching each of our team members.

The most difficult task is the pump challenge. We saw the pump the first time.

Thanks a lot for that training. It was a great opportunity and the German Teams enjoyed it a lot.

Curricular development in Bangladesh

Last October I trained again a group of engineers in Dhaka to become better trainers in the wastewater sector of the textil industry. GIZ hired me again to improve the local trainer capability in training. We developed a basic ETP Operator (Effluent Treatment Plants from textil industry) training with duration of 60 hours. 3 days training is too short to teach and excercise all needed information but often it is a start in rethinking the own teaching style. This lady is an owner of an own consultancy in Dhaka, quite experienced in moderation and training skills. We enjoyed the discussion and the intercultural exchange of experiences.
I teached more than 100 people in 5 counties (Croatia, Egypt, Jordan, India and Bangladesh) during the last 3 years. I do like that work. It is exciting and makes fun and I always learn a lot – the participants always likes it.
Powerpoint is spoiling communication and teaching, I try to push that down and to empower new (old) methods. When it comes to worker training, reduce powerpoint to a minimum.
